Interpretation
of the works
Lili Yuan's works follow the theme of “Tradition and contemporariness in harmony”.
Her works in water colour or black, grey and white – so-called Ink Art are based on an ancient Chinese Daoist philosophy. This philosophy assumes the unity of heaven and mankind and is the spiritual source of traditional paintings.
Through her work Lili Yuan illustrates importance of close ties between man and nature. Elements of nature are used as symbols to express human qualitites such as tolerance, calmness, simplicity, but also serendipity and hopefulness. These ideas are most clearly found in landscape-paintings, published in her book “A journey to the mountains and to the water”.
In contrast to that, her contemporary paintings are designed in a very different way with a stronger influence of aesthetical ideas of the western world.
Being influenced by the art of Chinese paintings Lili Yuan creates a new facette in her paintings which is parallel to both lines of art by combining the classical Eastern kind of painting with contemporary Western art.
Lili Yuan calls her works “A journey through time” – she begins with a realistic portrait of landscapes, flowers, birds and figures which are deeply influenced by the classical tradition and continues up to a contemporary way of painting. In doing so she experiments with the uided effect of chance in an aleatorical way. In these abstract forms the sense of harmony, creation, balance and strength shine forth. This journey through time is also a process of going back to the origins of the development of mankind.
At thee center of the works of art of Lili Yuan is the countermovement of these processes.
Lili Yuan, born into a family of artists in Shanghai, China is a freelance painter, member of the
“German National Association of Visual Artists” and has been living and working in Germany since 1992.

Her work “Memory” was awarded the Excellence Award of the first China Heavy Color Painting Exhibition organized by the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2001; In 2008, the meticulous painting “Purple Rhyme from the East” was selected for the 7th National Competition of Gongbi painting organized by the Chinese Artists Association; In 2005, her work “Lotus” was honored with the Excellence Award of the International Art Exhibition for Poetry, Painting and Calligraphy sponsored by the Chinese Painting Research Institute of the Ministry of Culture.
